Varanasi additionally frequently known as Benares, or Kashi is an urban area situated on the banks of the Ganga in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres [199 mi] southeast of state capital Lucknow. It is regarded as a holy urban area by Hindus and Jains, and holiest of the seven most sacred Hindu cities, of its old historical, cultural and religious heritage. Hindus think that death at Varanasi will bring salvation. It is among the oldest constantly inhabited urban areas in the world and the oldest in India.
