Lord Shiva - About Hinduism - What You Need to Know About

“Har Har Mahadev” is a usual chant which you can hear in every Hindu temple. Mahadev is one of the names of Lord Shiva. Mahadev means greatest of all Gods. Shiva is a first and biggest god of Hindu God trinity. Shiva is major Hindu god who is praised and worshiped by Hindus all around the world. According to Hindu religion, Shiva is ascetic god who lives on peaks of Himalaya which is above the reach of humans. Shiva is resembled to be a God with holding a trident in his left hand, cobra around his neck, moon stuck in his hairs and third eye on his forehead. It is said that Shiva is the God of destruction and his third eye always remain close. When he gets angry, his third eye gets open and it cause severe destruction.

Shiva – Above all Gods

Though according to Hindu religion it is unfair to compare Gods according to their power and existence and it preached that every God is supreme but there is a story which proves that why Shiva is called supreme of trinity. According to Vishnu Puran, once Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha gets into negotiation that who is supreme of both. Then they both went to Lord Shiva resolve this problem. Shiva after thinking created a doom and said that one who will first reach the top will be the supreme power. Both of them started the race but they were amazed that the doom was not ending and keep rising as they were moving on. This made them understand and they returned back and bow down to Shiva and said that you are the supreme of all Gods.

 Shiva and Parvati

Shiva and Parvati are husband and wife but this relationship was ever as simple as it looks. Shiva was first married to Sati, daughter of Daksh. Sati was married to Shiva against the will of Daksh. Once Daksh conducted a Yagya (oblation) but he didn’t invited Shiva and Sati. Therefore Sati got very angry with her father’s rude behavior and burnt herself in the fire of yagya. Shiva get very angry with the news of Sati’s sacrifice and he started Tandav dance (angry dance) holding Sati’s dead body and burnt Daksh’s whole empire with his third eye. Then Vishnu and Bramha came to calm down Shiva and Vishnu threw the body of Sati on earth. Her body fallen on earth in twelve parts at different places and since then these places are known as Shakti Peeth (Place of Power). Later Parvati who was the incarnation or rebirth of Sati was impressed with Shiva and get into severe Tapasya to get married with Shiva. Later Shiva get impressed with Parvati’s hardship and truthfulness and married to her. Ganesha and Kartikey were the two sons of Shiva and Parvati.

Lord Vishnu - About Hinduism - What You Need to Know About

Vishnu is one of the supreme God of Hindu religions. He is one of the trinity God of Hinduism. According to Hindus tradition, Lord Vishnu is a God of Savior and protection. Lord Vishnu is the preserver of the creation of Lord Bramha and is destroyed by Lord Shiva. According to Hindu epic books, Lord Vishnu rests on Shesnaag (Snake with multiple heads) along with his wife Goddess Laxmi in his adobe, Vaikunth in Sheer Sagar. Vishnu is resembled as a God with four arms holding different weapons in every arm such as discus, mace, lotus flower and sankh (traditional Hindu music instrument). Whenever there was a rise of evil on earth Lord Vishnu takes a birth in human form to end it and protect people on earth. There are nine avatars or incarnation of Vishnu on earth and it is said that tenth incarnation will be taken in Kalyug (ongoing era) when there will be intolerable rise of evil.

Vishnu – Avatars

Matsya – This was the first avatar of Lord Vishnu on earth. He took the incarnation of giant fish to save mankind and Manu from Damanaka. Later Manu was given responsibility to establish humanity on earth and preach them.

Kurma – This incarnation of Vishnu was of giant turtle that helped Devas and Asuras to nectar the ocean for immorality.

Varaha – This was the third incarnation of Lord Vishnu on earth in the form of boar. He took this incarnation to rescue earth from the evil activities of Hiranakshya, a demon.

Mohini – This was a feminine incarnation of Vishnu on earth. Vishnu took this avatar to rescue Lord Shiva from Bhasmasura, a demon who was blessed by Lord Shiva that on whomever he will put his hand will burn into ash. 

 

Narasimha – Narasimha was the fifth incarnation of Vishnu in the form of half man and half lion. He formed this avatar to rescue his biggest devotee, Prahlad from Hiranyakashyap.

Vamana – This was the sixth avatar in a form of dwarf to rescue the world from King Bali. Bali was the most igoist but very generous. Vamana appeared as dwarf and asked him to donate area of land sizing his feet. Then Vamana grown giant and covered his whole kingdom in his feet.

Parashuram – This was the seventh avatar in a form of angry sage with axe and bow and arrow. He took this incarnation to rescue people from cruelty of Kshatriyas. 

Rama – Rama was the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, a personality of humble, generous and loyal. He took this avatar to kill Ravana. This was first time that Rama and Parshurama, two incarnation of Vishnu were present in same era on earth.

Krishna – This was probably the last incarnation of Vishnu on earth. This incarnation was to kill Kansh and help Pandavas to defeat Kauravs in Mahabharat.

Kalki – It is said that Kalki will be the tenth and last incarnation of Vishnu on earth in Kalyug. This incarnation will be in a form of human in white cloths and on a white horse with sword in his hand to kill immorality. It is also said that Kalki will kill all the people on this earth and rescue only few moral humans to establish life on earth in new form.

Lakshmi - Goddess of Wealth & Beauty!!

Goddess Laxmi is recognized as the goddess of wealth and prosperity according to Hindu religion. Goddess Laxmi is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga or Shakti. Laxmi is praised and devoted by millions of Hindu all around the world to get wealth and prosperity. Goddess Laxmi is also the wife of Lord Vishnu. She descanted on earth in Treta Yug as Sita, wife of Lord Rama and later in Dwapar Yug she descended as Rukmani, wife of Lord Krishna. Goddess Laxmi is praised and devoted more on Diwali along with Lord Ganesh as it is said according to Hindu religion that devotion of Lord Ganesh and Laxmi on Diwali brings new energy, prosperity and wealth to household.

Goddess Durga - The Mother Goddess & Her Symbolism

Durga is a Sanskrit name which means invincible or inaccessible. Durga is one of the biggest feminine deities of Hindu religion. She is resembled as the Shakti which means power, energy and force. Goddess Durga is appeared as a feminine character with eighteen arms each arm holding different weapons and riding on tiger. Goddess Durga is a one such goddess which contains combined power of all the Gods such as trident of Lord Shiva, discus of Lord Vishnu, thunderbolt of Lord Indra and many others. Durga is worshipped a lot in West Bengal during Durga Pooja which is celebrated on the same day of Dasehra. According to Hindu religion, on this day Goddess Durga killed Mahisasur (a demon) and his whole Army.

Radha the name itself represents love and affection. Radha is a central name to appear whenever we talk of Lord Krishna. Radha and Krishna together are represented as true love. Radha was the first love of Lord Krishna and was his most favorite among all Gopis (Girlfriends of Krishna). Radha is also called as Radhika, Radha Rani and Radhika Rani. Though Radha was not married to Lord Krishna but still the story of true love and affection between both of them is still recognized as the most inspiring story. Radha and Krishna together represents absolute truth according to some religion. In Vaishnav and Nimbarika religion, Radha and Krishna are the major deity of worship.

Laxman is one of the most important characters of great Indian epic Ramayan. Laxman was the son of Dasratha, King of Ayodhya. He was the step brother of Lord Rama. Laxman is recognized as a most angry personality. Laxman was an incarnation of Shesnaag (Lord Vishnu’s stance). Laxman was an idol brother who obeyed each and every order of his brother. Laxman accompanied Lord Rama in his 14 years long exile and fought bravely along his brother to rescue his sister in law, SIta. For his brotherhood and obedience Lord Rama flourished him as most loving and favorite bother of all four. Later Lord Rama also proclaimed him as the king of Avadh.

When we talk of Krishna the posture which strikes in our mind is small, dark and cute boy with a peacock feature on his crown with a flute in his hand and a cute smile on his face. Krishna is one of the most popular and important deity of Hindu religion. Krishna is a symbol of love, virtue and morality. Krishna played a very important role in Mahabharat which was a war between wise and evil. Krishna teaches the chapter of Bhagwat Gita to Arjun whiles the war of Mahabharat. Krishna also was a very notorious in his childhood and more than that a good friend of all.

Krishna – Childhood

Krishna was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Dwapar Yug. Krishna was the 8^th child of Devaki and Vasudev, King of Mathura was imprisoned by his brother in law, Kansh succeeding King of Mathura. Kansh was astrologically told that the 8^th child of Devaki and Vasudev will be the one who will kill him therefore he imprisoned both of them and killed all the seven children. Vasudev didn’t let him know about the birth of 8^th child and therefore in the midnight Vasudev escaped with infant Krishna to Gokul and left him at his friend’s home who was Nand. 

Nand and his wife Yasoda parent Krishna as his own child along with Balaram who was elder than Krishna. Krishna was very notorious in his childhood as Yasoda was very tensed with his activities and once tied him to a pillar but when she returned she found that Krishna was untied and eating mud. When she asked him to open his mouth she was surprised to see whole universe in Krishna’s mouth and then she understand that he is not a normal child. Later in his young age he was told of his original parents and then he killed Kansh and released Devaki and Vasudev.

Krishna in Mahabharat

After killing Kansh, Krishna succeeded as the king of Mathura. Later he married to Rukmani who was the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi. With marrying to Rukhmani, Krishna captured Dwarka and ruled over it. Then he got notice of upcoming war between Kauravs and Pandavas. Both came party came to Krishna asking for his support in war. Krishna said that he cannot support both side and neither will he fight in war but he left the choice between both of them to choose either Krishna or his army. Kauravas agreed to have army support of Krishna to empower them but Pandavas asked Krishna to join them just to provide moral support. Later in Mahabharat war Pandavas sign a convincing win over Kauravas with moral teaching and art skill of war preached by Krishna. 

 

Krishna with Radha and Sudama

Sudama was the childhood friend of Krishna. When Krishna became the king of Dwarka, Sudama was living a poor life and then he think of asking for some financial help from his friend Krishna. Sudama reached Dwarka but the courtiers trashed him out. Then Krishna get informed that one poor man reached outside saying himself as your friend. Krishna ran out and stopped Sudama. He brought him to his court and served him with his hospitality. Sudama tried to speak of help but didn’t of hesitation. But Krishna understood and gave him hand full grain. 

When Sudama reached to his home he was surprised to see a luxury fort in place of his hut and full of luxury items. Then he opened the parcel of grain given by Krishna and again he was surprised to see the parcel full of gold coins instead of grains. Without Radha, Krishna is incomplete. Radha was the first love of Krishna since his childhood but unfortunately he cannot get married to Radha but still Radha is recognized as the half part of Krishna. In many Hindu religions such as Vaishnava, Radha and Krishna are worshipped as the main deity.
